This year at Expozine I debuted the second issue of Queer Enough, a zine about queer experience in different-gender relationships. Contributors are Jimbeau, Frankie Mess, Chiquita Violette, Rose Cooper, Corin V. Barclay, Beja Alisheva, JL Long, Kaley Kennedy, Oliver Fugler, Sharday Mosurinjohn, and me... writing which comes from all over Canada and the US, and Australia too! It is now available to order here.

I was tabling with James Kirkpatrick (the other half of our collaborative art team, Dusty Peas). Both of us had our art zines too, and James had his hardcover art book/full-length downloadable album + 7-inch vinyl Before the End.

Not Bad For London

The title Not Bad For London is based on a Jason McLean drawing where a lone tree sits next to a forked river called The Thames. The tree has big googly eyes and a flowing head of hair. But, most importantly, the tree has roots.

Living and working as an artist in London can sometimes have its challenges. We are situated between the dynamics of Toronto and Detroit, in a city where Greg Curnoe, Paterson Ewen, and Jack Chambers became national icons. Perhaps, then, it is the history, and the fact that London is a challenging place to live, that so many artists have chosen to work and stay.

Not Bad For London celebrates a group of young artists who acknowledge this past, but have forged ahead, creating their own identity and relevance. These seven artists are multi-dimensional; they draw, paint, sculpt, make films, installations, zines, and sound art. Working alone or together in collaboration, their art creates an imaginary world based on the places they visit, the colours they see, and the noises they hear. With this exhibition, you are invited to discover how each artist uses their own and their shared experiences to reflect the world in which we live.

"Museum London's having a book sale. Look through its archive of in-house publications. Also, your favorite downtown London bookstores will be selling books on art and local history as well as a selection of historical zines. Publications by many of London's zine artists will also be featured at the event. Independent presses such as Offerings and Hunter & Cook, both out of Toronto, will also be represented, as well as London's Parker Branch. The afternoon includes drop-in activities such as button-making with Jason McLean, book-binding with Lido Pimienta, and zine creation with Jamie Q."

Queer Enough seeks illustrations and non-fiction stories or essays that reflect on experiences in different-gender relationships while being out as queer, for issue #2!

Different-gender partners of queers who may not necessarily identify as queer are also welcome to share their thoughts and perspectives.

Submissions can address any of these points or propose another topic that relates to queer different-gender partnerships:

- challenges specific to queer different-gender relationships
- feeling queer enough in a different-gender relationship
- queerness as encompassing more than sex or gender identity
- maintaining outness in a different-gender relationship
- defining your own queerness
- trans experience with changing gender dynamics in a relationship as one's own gender identity changes
- relationships where one person is queer-identified and the other isn't
- monogamy/non-monogamy in queer different-gender relationships
- being accountable for the straight privilege you might benefit from
- Is one partner's identity affected by the other's identity?
- queer visibility/invisibility in a different-gender relationship
- Does your behavior in public differ in a different-gender relationship (for example, hand-holding and other displays of affection)?
- how your private sexual practice is actually queer as can be
- how "opposite-sex" fails to describe your relationship, as if there was an opposite to your identity anyway! But to most of the world you probably look like a boy and a girl.

FAQ: What does "different-gender" mean?

I use "different-gender" as a more inclusive alternative to what some people might call "opposite-sex." I use "different" instead of "opposite" because "opposite" implies that there are only two genders. "Different-gender" could mean male/female, but it also includes people who have more varied gender identities, such as androgynous or gender-neutral, or something else beyond the gender binary.

I use "gender" instead of "sex" based on the suggestion of someone with a trans history who contributed to the first issue. His view is that people define sex in different ways (sometimes based on physical body parts, sometimes based on self-identified sex), but that there is generally a more clear understanding of gender.

Submissions of any length will be considered, but the length of the submissions included in the first issue (approx. 300 to 1750 words) is a good guideline to follow.

Please include a unique title, a 1-2 sentence bio, and any contact info such as a website or email address that you would like published in the zine. Anonymous submissions will be accepted also. If there is any information included along with your submission, such as your name, that you do not want published please make this very clear.

Deadline is ongoing. Issue #2 is tentatively imagined for November 2011, but is entirely dependent upon your submissions to exist. Send them in, the sooner the better!

Send writing as .doc or .rtf files (NO .docx files!!) and illustrations as high-res .jpg or .tiff files (minimum resolution 300dpi). If you would like to submit both artwork and writing, please send these as separate submissions. There is no guarantee that your art will be included with your writing and vice versa. Submission does not guarantee inclusion in the zine, but do not let this deter you from sending something in!

Page size is 8.5" tall x 5.5" wide, including a small unprintable margin. Illustrations can be made to fit within that size, or be made for a 2-page spread (8.5" x 11" minus margin). Illustrations that aren't that size will be re-sized to fit, and put in with the text (or maybe on the cover) in whatever way works best.

Activation opens tonight at Forest City Gallery. I'm showing my What Luck project, which features silk-screened prints that document my losing LOTTO 6/49 plays. For $2 you can buy a ticket for a chance to win a print. There will be one winner for every 25 tickets sold. The draw will take place after the show closes on July 23rd, so even if you aren't able to attend the opening you can still see the show and get your tickets!

This project will be shown alongside work by Christine Negus and Sarah Scope, the other artists featured in Activation; and in conjunction with Lorraine Thomson's exhibition Entanglement.

Gaybomb explodes!

In San Francisco, June 2nd, curator Caitlin Sweet smashed my Gaybomb Piñata at the opening of Dirtstar 2011: Take Root. My Gaybombs reclaim the idea of a chemical weapon intended to cause homosexual behavior, proposed in 1994 by the U.S. Air Force Wright Laboratory. The piñata is full of silicone toys and safer-sex goodies donated by Babeland, Vixen, and Come As You Are, and all the Gaybombs are covered in glitter donated by Lit Cosmetics.

The show closes June 19th with a night of performances and installations from 5-7pm. Take Root is part of the National Queer Arts Festival which has a ton of amazing events happening, details via the Queer Cultural Center.

I am very grateful for the support of the Ontario Arts Council, an agency of the Government of Ontario. I received funding from their Exhibition Assistance Program, which helped make my participation in this exhibition possible.

- Is the legal status of your name important to you? Have you legally changed your name?
- challenges faced with legal name change procedures / tips for others seeking to legally change their names
- legal names and their relation to the production of gender, citizenship, and nationalism

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Submissions of any length will be considered, however please keep in mind that longer pieces could limit the space available for others. A long submission may be better self-published as a zine of its own!

If you would like to submit both artwork and writing, please send these as separate submissions. There is no guarantee that your art will be included with your writing and vice versa.

What Makes an Object Queer?

As a queer artist whose work usually exists somewhere between abstraction and representation, I've started to wonder what makes an object queer. Is an object queer when it's not quite one thing or another? Can art that does not explicitly address queer topics reflect the identity of its maker in other ways? Inspired by Sara Ahmed's Queer Phenomenology, this limited-edition silkscreened book proposes some criteria for queer objects, accompanied by illustrations that are reminiscent of my sculptural work.

My friend, and brilliant artist, Anthea Black, has said this about the book: "What Makes an Object Queer? is a gorgeous and thoughtful book. Its cleverness comes in the fact that amidst Jamie Q's playful drawings we find powerful queer thinking."

My big news at Expozine was the debut of my hand-bound MFA thesis, Do-It-Yourself: Politics and Aesthetics in the Margins and the Mainstream. It features colour images throughout, and is in general a more pleasant read than the double-spaced, Times New Roman, single-sided, letter-sized version required by the university. So far I've made ten copies. I intend to make at least ten more, and from there make them based on demand since it takes me an hour to put each one together!

I also debuted a little zine called MFA Doodles, which collects the doodles from the margins of my MFA course notes. I made it as a gift for Lynda Barry when I went to see her talk at the International Festival of Authors in Toronto. It was inspired by her book Picture This: "Almost everyone has a kind of mark they tend to make when they are listening... especially when they are slightly bored and listening. What's yours?"

Art Metropole presents a group of discrete projects by Jamie Q, which come together as part of her inquiry into the social potential of art objects and the systems for their exchange. The component parts of each project are posed for dispersal. Hexagonal paintings made from found shapes exist as a large-scale modular piece that can be divided, sold, and reconfigured in private space. A silkscreened print series documents the artist’s attempts at winning a LOTTO 6/49 jackpot—each print pairs her losing numbers with the winning numbers of the corresponding draw. Paper-mâché sculpture sets suggest a shared language that channels the playfulness and makeshift economy of the carnivalesque.

James and I have a new Dusty Peas box-set (but with no box) of two silkscreened books: Surprise Prize and Treats for Faceballs. We just finished this one today! It's a limited edition of 50 copies.

Surprise Prize is our first narrative book. It's about a race, and it features Backwards Dracula Team, made up of Dr. Diamond Juice and Professor Snacks, some characters that we invented and animated in April of last year.

The Cheaper Show, Vancouver, June 26th

The Cheaper Show just announced its list of artists, including me among others like James Kirkpatrick, Peter Thompson, Marc Bell, Julie Doucet, Jason McLean, Sonja Ahlers, Mark DeLong and Chris von Szombathy. The Cheaper Show happens at W2 Storyeum, 151 West Cordova Street, June 26th in Vancouver. The lead curator is Lisa Giroday of the LES Gallery.

"The concept of The Cheaper Show is very simple: 200 multi-disciplined international artists presenting 400 pieces of art, each priced at $200 for one night only. Far from being an 'art sale,' each exhibiting artist consciously makes a sacrifice by selling their work for less than its potential value. This creates united support for the event, the arts community, and an opportunity for this show to take place in an environment that is accessible to everyone. In turn, many walk away with sales, exposure, commissions and gallery representation, as well as having an opportunity to connect with peers on an even playing field."

Struts presents an evening with artist-in-residence James Kirkpatrick and guests Marc Bell, Jamie Q and Peter Thompson. The group will discuss their solo and collaborative projects, followed by Q+A, snacks and refreshments, and a musical performance by Brain Trust and Pea Brain. The setting: an exhibition of their art, including books and zines, paintings, drawings, and sculptures.

Together James and Peter collaborate as Brain Trust, James and Jamie as Dusty Peas, and as a trio they are Pea Brain. Peter and Marc have been collaborating for about two decades, and are both associated with the legendary All-Star Schnauzer Band.

James and I had one week to print 100 copies of our book and poster/sculpture, which involved burning and pulling 17 screens 100 times (plus a few extras just in case). Crazy, but we did it!

High humidity + one small drying rack = frantic problem-solving. Thankfully the angled ceiling on the second floor allowed us to hang rows of prints to dry. We were up all night running prints up the stairs, and had every possible surface of the building covered in drying prints.

A few days later, here's me and James registering the blue layer of the cover print.

Beau and Selwyn saved the day. We had the windows shut and heaters on to help the prints dry. Selwyn toasts them over the heater before running them upstairs.

James needed this special Jamie-Q-designed head wrap to cushion all the screen-balancing.

Prints are cut, thanks to Joe Landry at the Dawson Print Shop.

Pages are folded, the assemble-it-yourself sculpture has 3 more colours to print.

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME & SHAPES:
This two-part limited edition is a product of the Roberts Street Social Centre's artist-in-residence programme in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The hand-silkscreened book includes prints of images built up using collage techniques, as well as Dusty Peas’ otherworldly paintings. A companion to the deluxe zine, the Journey Through Time & Shapes DIY print/sculpture requires your participation to reach its next level of existence. With some scissors and glue, you can build your own spacecraft. It is decorated and designed with the playful shapes of Dusty Peas, whose work combines absurdity and abstraction through intuitive freestyle processes.

ABOUT DUSTY PEAS:
James Kirkpatrick and Jamie Q are Dusty Peas, a London Ontario-based collaborative team that makes art in a variety of media. Their drawings, sculptures, self-published zines, and stop-motion animations are at once both calculated and haphazard, and speak to the generative possibilities of constructive fun and good old-fashioned imagination.

Jamie Q studied sculpture at the Alberta College of Art and Design, and at the Canberra School of Art in Australia. She received her BFA in 2002, and was a member of the Long Haul artists’ collective in Montreal for four years. She is currently working towards a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Western Ontario, where her research interests involve DIY distribution strategies, creative labour, and the production of value in the cultural field.

James Kirkpatrick received his BFA from NSCAD University in 2002. His work has been shown internationally, and is featured in the traveling group exhibition Pulp Fiction, presented at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in summer 2009. He is also well known as the graffiti artist and rapper Thesis Sahib. He has created artwork for several album covers, and his collaborative art book with Peter Thompson, Brain Trust, is published by Anteism.
